Opinion on Health Care Swings in Negative Direction
In the survey, only 33 percent say President Obama’s health-reform effort is a good idea, versus 46 percent who consider it a bad idea.
That result is essentially unchanged from last month’s poll. However, the number saying that Obama’s health plan is a bad idea has increased 20 percentage points since April, when the public supported the reform effort by a 33-26 percent margin.
So the percentage favoring the health bill today (33%) is precisely the same as it was nine months ago, in April. Meanwhile, the number who oppose it jumped from 26% to 46%. That means the swing in opinion was entirely from undecided to negative, by 20 points!
You probably couldn’t ask for a clearer measure of the degree to which opponents of reform completely defined — and indeed dominated — the debate. Ya think this has something to do with the inability of Dems to rally behind the provisions in the bill that people actually liked?
